Dog Coughing

Dog

Coughing in dogs can be caused by many conditions, from minor throat irritation to serious heart or lung disease. The type of cough (dry, wet, honking, gagging) and when it occurs (during exercise, at night, when excited) provides important diagnostic clues.

Possible Causes

  • Kennel cough (infectious tracheobronchitis)
  • Canine influenza (dog flu)
  • Heart disease (especially in older or small breeds)
  • Collapsing trachea (common in small breeds)
  • Pneumonia (bacterial, viral, or aspiration)
  • Allergies or environmental irritants (smoke, dust)
  • Foreign body in the throat or airways
  • Heartworm disease
  • Lung tumors or cancer
  • Reverse sneezing (often confused with coughing)

When to See a Vet
Important

Seek veterinary care if any of the following apply:

  • Coughing persists for more than a few days
  • The cough produces mucus, blood, or pink-tinged foam
  • Your dog is having difficulty breathing or breathing rapidly
  • Coughing is accompanied by lethargy, loss of appetite, or fever
  • Your dog is gagging or retching frequently after coughing
  • Your dog has not been vaccinated against kennel cough and has been around other dogs
  • Coughing worsens at night or during exercise

First Aid Tips
Home Care

These tips can help while you monitor the situation or wait for your vet appointment:

  1. Keep your dog in a calm, stress-free environment
  2. Use a harness instead of a collar to avoid pressure on the throat
  3. Run a humidifier to moisten the air and soothe irritated airways
  4. Avoid exposing your dog to smoke, strong perfumes, or dusty environments
  5. Offer honey (1/2 to 1 teaspoon) for soothing — but not for puppies under 1 year
  6. Isolate your dog from other dogs if you suspect kennel cough (it is highly contagious)
