Dog Shaking Head

Dog

Frequent head shaking in dogs is almost always a sign of ear discomfort. While an occasional head shake is normal (such as after getting wet), persistent or violent head shaking indicates irritation, pain, or infection in the ear canal. Left untreated, this can lead to an aural hematoma (blood blister on the ear flap).

Possible Causes

  • Ear infection (otitis externa) — bacterial or yeast
  • Ear mites (more common in puppies)
  • Allergies causing inflammation in the ear canal
  • Water trapped in the ear after swimming or bathing
  • Foreign body in the ear (grass awn, foxtail, insect)
  • Excessive ear wax buildup
  • Ear polyps or tumors
  • Aural hematoma (blood-filled swelling on the ear flap)
  • Insect bite or sting inside the ear
  • Neurological issue (less common)

When to See a Vet
Important

Seek veterinary care if any of the following apply:

  • Head shaking is persistent and occurs throughout the day
  • You notice redness, swelling, or discharge from the ear
  • There is a foul or yeasty odor coming from the ear
  • Your dog is tilting their head to one side
  • The ear flap appears swollen or puffy (possible hematoma)
  • Your dog cries or pulls away when you touch their ears
  • There is hearing loss or balance issues

First Aid Tips
Home Care

These tips can help while you monitor the situation or wait for your vet appointment:

  1. Gently inspect the outer ear for visible redness, discharge, or foreign objects
  2. Do not insert anything into the ear canal (no cotton swabs)
  3. If water is the cause, use a veterinary ear drying solution
  4. Keep your dog from scratching at the ear to prevent hematoma
  5. Clean the outer ear with a vet-approved ear cleaning solution
  6. Note the color and smell of any discharge to report to your vet
