Dog Limping

Dog

Limping (lameness) in dogs is a common sign of pain or discomfort in one or more limbs. It can range from a subtle change in gait to complete inability to bear weight on a leg. Limping may appear suddenly after an injury or develop gradually over time due to a chronic condition.

Possible Causes

  • Muscle strain or sprain from overexertion
  • Torn cruciate ligament (ACL tear)
  • Hip or elbow dysplasia
  • Arthritis or joint inflammation
  • Paw pad injury, cut, or foreign object (thorn, glass)
  • Fracture or broken bone
  • Lyme disease or tick-borne illness
  • Patellar luxation (dislocated kneecap)
  • Bone cancer (osteosarcoma), especially in large breeds
  • Nail injury or overgrown nails

When to See a Vet
Important

Seek veterinary care if any of the following apply:

  • Limping persists for more than 24-48 hours
  • Your dog refuses to bear any weight on the leg
  • Visible swelling, deformity, or the limb hangs at an unusual angle
  • Your dog is whimpering, yelping, or showing signs of severe pain
  • The limping is accompanied by fever, lethargy, or loss of appetite
  • You suspect a fracture or dislocation
  • The limping started after a known traumatic event (fall, hit by car)

First Aid Tips
Home Care

These tips can help while you monitor the situation or wait for your vet appointment:

  1. Restrict your dog's activity — no running, jumping, or stairs
  2. Check the paw pads for cuts, thorns, or foreign objects
  3. Apply a cold compress wrapped in a towel for 10-15 minutes if swelling is present
  4. Do not give human pain medications (ibuprofen and acetaminophen are toxic to dogs)
  5. Keep your dog on a leash for bathroom breaks to limit movement
  6. If you suspect a fracture, try to immobilize the area and transport to the vet immediately
